“Gender Discrimination in The Workplace

There is an ongoing issue in America with gender equality in the workplace. Although there is a lot more female representation in higher positions at various businesses there is still a clear separation between men in power and women in power.

This issue is very important to me as a woman because I hope to have the same opportunities in my work life as a man. Often women feel reluctant to speak up in the workplace due to the fear of not being heard or taken seriously. I hope that my future children can live in a world where this fear is nonexistent.

The article “Gender Dynamics in the Planning Workplace: The Importance of Women in Management.” (2020) shows evidence from studies that they administered showing that women feel less heard or that they do not have the same opportunities as men.

The people being affected by this issue are all women in America. Even though there are many women that have good jobs in high positions it does not mean they do not experience discrimination in the workplace. This issue stems from the traditional ideas of men having the role of the worker and women staying home. Some people will stand by these ideas (sometimes without realizing it) and let that affect their treatment of women at work. This is an issue in millions of workplace environments. Even though this has always been an issue in America and all over the world, it is getting better and there are programs and other training put in place to help fight workplace discrimination. All we can do is actively stay informed and try to be a part of the change.

I am responding to my classmates’, Valerie Mancuso, blog post about gender discrimination in the workplace. First off, I really enjoyed reading this blog because this is something that is a real problem and has been a problem for so long in our society, but also in the workplace. I feel like it has been ignored a lot, and even pushed to the side by people who feel like it is not a big issue. As a woman, I do not work but I do play basketball. In the sports world, men are watched a lot more on TV, they are promoted a lot more than women and their salaries are so much more than women salaries at the WNBA and NBA level. The two highest paid basketball athletes are Steph Curry and Liz Cambage. Steph Curry is making $43 million dollars while Liz is making $500,000, and under her is Elena Delle Donne who is making $221,450 as of 2021. Just off salary alone, men are making so much more than women and we play the same sport. With that being said, the gender equality and discrimination is huge and the gap between men and women is a large gap that hopefully can become closer to being filled in the future.
